A lack of focus !!

I had spent the afternoon at the eye clinic having some tests on my vision. The rumour that it was the pool team who booked the appointment is a complete lie. Due to a major cock-up by the hospital they didn't inform me that part of the testing involved me having my pupils dilated. They remained the size of dinner plates for eight hours which made the bike ride to the Irish Club highly eventful (I wasn't allowed to drive). My vision was blurry and I was struggling to focus - god knows what the excuse was for the rest of the Irish Champs 2B as we met the Lady Haig yet again.

We had already played a double header against them in the cup and managed a 6-6 and 7-2 win but we were lucky to salvage a draw in the first after being 6-4 down. I knew they meant business as I arrived at 7:15 to see John Townsend rolling balls around the table with his hand and pointing out the state of the table. Once everyone else had arrived we took the decision to move to the second table in the corner and play the match there. So we substituted the reasonable table with a couple of bad rolls for the not so reasonable table with rubber sticking out of one pocket. Perhaps it was a psychological ploy ?

Now, normal service this year has been to send out Mr Averages in trap one and immediately go 1-0 down. Well, once again Pat didn't disappoint as John Kennedy put the first one on the board for the Haig. For the eighth time in the last nine matches we found ourselves taking the Graham Norton option and had gone behind early.

John Shiel was up next against John Townsend. JS had been beating JT like a rented mule for the last two meetings winning four out of four against him, this was our banker to get back into the match. But JT was in no mood for another loss and took out a fantastic finish to the roar of the Haig players. It was 2-0 and you just sensed that we were heading for an Audley Harrison.

Brad went up against Ben Kiely and played possibly the slackest shot Ive seen from him when he potted a ball and managed to crash into one of Bens knocking it into the pocket to give away two shots. Ben took his time over his next shot and then just after the sun came up (!) he finally played a Kew Garden on his last two balls (lovely plant), put the black in the middle and suddenly it was 3-0.

Being 3-0 down feels bad enough , but when you pick up the result card and see West Ham fan A.Brant up next you start to feel like a Hammer and wonder where the next point is coming from. As if it wasn't bad enough he was up against Tizzy who quite incredibly has had 3 dishes against us in four frames. About 1 minute and 36 seconds later he had four dishes and was looking for a matching canteen of cutlery as Andys frame consisted of a handshake, and then another handshake. 4-0

JY conjured up a frame that went from the sublime to the ridiculous. He potted some great balls, then he miscued from six inches and missed his ball completely then took out what looked to be a great clearance only to miss a red that made me wonder if it was him who needed the eye test. Finally he sent the white off the top cushion and back down to cut his last ball into the middle only for the white to fly in off into the opposite bottom corner. Lee Greenwood led the high fives in the Haigs corner after making it 5-0.

My contribution to the evening (apart from verbally abusing the travelling monkey show that doubled up as the Irish Champs 2B !) was to not play in the first six. My vision was still a bit blurry but it did save me from witnessing most of the farce of the first half. Captain Terry stepped in to beat Danny to give us a slight glimmer of hope at 5-1 and stop us from being in a position where we only had a draw to play for after six frames !

Sparing the gory details the comeback was short lived. The only highlight was my 'Lazarus' like recovery to play Danny in the 11th frame and win. However the entire team had already left by then except for Terry so I had no one to brag to. In the haziness of the Guiness and bad vision I cant even remember who won the other frame for us in the 9-3 final score. Im pretty sure that it was double doughnut time for Andy (00), Brad (definitely 00!) and John Shiel (00). Terry lost to Lee in the final frame of the night and looked thoroughly miserable - until he dropped the £100 jackpot out of the fruity 2 minutes later !

So I headed home at a gingerly pace on the bike to pack for 'the Sluggers' Amsterdam stag do the next day. I hoped that this was the only spanking I would get this weekend.
